Use Mantras to Keep You Motivated

IT’S TIME TO GET REAL: THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS THAT HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO POP UP AND HOLD YOU BACK IN LIFE, BUT YOU SHOULDN’T BE ONE OF THEM.

 

I get it, getting fit and healthy can seem like climbing up a mountain during a snowstorm. Often, it can be hard to stay motivated through the days, particularly when you aren’t seeing the results you want…overnight. Losing weight and getting healthy is a life-long lifestyle change, so finding something that works for you is equal to finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Take a look at how fitness mantras can bridge the gap and provide the motivation that you so desperately need.

WHAT ARE MANTRAS?

A mantra is a powerful phrase or set of words, that is used repetitively in a meditative way. These phrases are made to be calming and inspirational to help you bust through those bad days and stay the course, even when you really want to give up.

HOW DO MANTRAS WORK?

Fitness mantras work by keeping you motivated and reminding you of the reason that you are doing this (ie. what’s your WHY?). Sometimes that is all it takes to go from not wanting to do it to being eager to get the job done. Repeating the same phrase again and again can help you to psychologically prepare yourself for the lifestyle choices needed to reach your goals. 

A big reason why fitness mantras work is the fact that if you repeat a certain phrase to yourself, you are more likely to believe it. If you always doubt yourself, you will start to believe it. Likewise, if you tell yourself that you are awesome and worthy every day, you will begin to believe that instead. You are reprogramming your brain and rewriting your story by repeating your mantra; instead of constantly saying to yourself, “I can’t do this.” you can flip that to, “I am going to slay this workout!” You will notice the shift from your old story to your new one the more you chant it to yourself. Remember, your mentality is everything.

PICKING YOUR PERFECT MANTRA

The mantra that is perfect for you isn’t necessarily going to be the perfect one for Betty down the street, because your mentality isn’t necessarily the same. You haven’t written the same story. While you may have similar struggles, they have likely manifested themselves in different ways. 

Choosing a fitness mantra will largely depend on your personality and goals. The phrase should be short, as you want it to be easy to remember and easy to repeat. Mantras are often snippets of inspirational quotes, so you can choose whatever you want. Look up inspirational quotes to get started. There are tons of great quotes out there to choose from. If you already have a favorite quote, you can use that instead. It just needs to be something that aligns with your goals, and that will motivate you to stay the course.

USING YOUR MANTRA

These phrases work best when used as a chant, repeating the words either during a workout, at crucial times during the day, or before and after meditation. You can also write your phrase on sticky notes to post around your house or in the office. Honestly, you can put it wherever you want. Print it out and frame it, make it the background on your phone, write it on the front of your journal, or put it on your gym locker. Wherever you will see it is the best place for it to be, and the more you see it, the better.

Some of the best times to use the mantra during the day are when you first wake up, in the shower, before or while preparing meals, before and during workouts, and whenever you are tempted to skip a workout or sneak that extra piece of chocolate. The more you use the mantra, the better it will work.
